Background of Kainighat upazila

 

Naming:
It is legally known that Kanai Ghat was named after Kanhi, a moderate named Surai in the Surma River on the bank of present day Kanaighat Bazar. Accordingly, Kanaighat Upazila was named after Kanai Chou, an influential person of Jainta Raj Darbar in Mulagul area of ​​Kanaighat upazila.

Geographical location:
Assam and Meghalaya state of India on the north, Jaintiapur upazila on the west, Golapganj and Beanibazar upazilas on the south, and Zakiganj upazila on the east of Kanaighat upazila.

Location of Upazila:
During the old days, Kanaighat is part of the independent Sovereign Jainta kingdom, due to its normal condition, education, culture, and some other upazilas of neighboring areas are slightly different. After 90 years of British occupation of the Indian subcontinent, this Jainta kingdom takes over. Currently there are 09 unions in Kainighat upazila. 09 Union was formed with 10 parganas in Satbak, Mulangul, Faljur, Chotul, Chaura, Bajeraj, Paschimbhag, Bardesh, Baurbhag and Barafoud. Satbakk Pargana was formed by presently Dighirpar East and Satbakk union which was included in the Mughal state on the south bank of Surma river. In the year 1835, Jainta came under British rule on 16 March. As a result, Muslims get the opportunity to settle here permanently. After the collapse of Jainta kingdom in the year 1836, Jainta along with Kanaighat was entrusted to Sylhet district collectorate. In order to maintain peace and order the British government established thana at Laxmipur Mouza of Mulagul Pargana in 1841. Then the thana was called police station. After transfer the thana Mulagul to Kanaighat in 1880, the thana and other administrative offices gradually developed into the present Kainighat Sadar. Since 1905, the construction of secondary schools, madrasas and mosques has increased in Kanaighat and since then the number of educational institutions till date has increased. After the upgraded Kainighat thana thana to upazila on 24/03/1983, education, culture, agriculture, health, communication and other socio-economic conditions in the upazila have improved more and more.
